Since its opening in September 1996, the Erasmus Bridge has formed a majestic gateway over the Maas. It was built to connect the ambitious "Kop van Zuid" reconstruction project to the city ministries.
It is today with its 142 m high pylon a new landmark for the city. Amsterdam architect Ben van Berkel's design broke away from the idea of a simple functional construction. He created a sculptural structure; its planning had to overcome numerous technical, urban development and design challenges. The asymmetrical construction represents three bridges in one.
A cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 280 m is complemented by an open-side viaduct and a moving bridge.
Every day 20,000 people cross the 33 m wide bridge deck which has double tramlines, two-lane roadways as well as cycle tracks and pavements.
