Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Since its establishment in 1937, the Salomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York has been deemed one of the most important private art collections in the world.
The construction of a dependance in Bilbao was intended to be a museum building which broke away from all traditional standards in architecture. The materials used by Frank O. Gehry are just as bold as the construction and outward form of the building. Large parts of the façade comprise shining titanium elements, giving the building a futuristic appearance in combination with the freely formed outer surface. The interior of the museum houses diverse collections of modern and contemporary art on three floors. 11,000 m² of the total 24,000 m² serve as exhibition area.
An impressive 50 m high atrium flooded with light forms the central exit and point of orientation for visitors. The largest of the exhibition rooms is the 130 m long east wing which in form resembles the hull of a ship.
