Museum der Moderne, Salzburg
Salzburg’s world-famous city skyline has recently acquired an additional silhouette: a striking, attention-drawing, building of light natural stone and glass situated on the Mönchsberg mountain above the baroque old town. After turbulent competition, use of the site has undergone a long-desired change: in the shadow of the historic water tower, the popular Café/Casino Winkler disappeared and made way for the next venue to draw the crowds: the »Museum der Moderne«.
The museum cube is enthroned on this exposed site, like a bar or rather an overdimensioned frame for a 25 metre long glass façade. Visitors can reach the Mönchsberg from the city centre where three lifts bring them onto a plateau some 60 metres above.
Once in front of the museum, visitors now have a view not only of the baroque city and Hohensalzburg Fortress on the opposite side but also of the exhibited art.
At night though it is the museum building that draws attention: it rises up out of a dark background - a snow white monolith claiming its place among Salzburg’s landmarks.
